The heat seems to be turned up to the maximum temperature, abrupt and fast-moving thunderstorms roll in and out, and at times you feel as though the humidity will never ease. This is August in Alabama. So why do anglers put up with these extreme conditions to fish in the many lakes that make up this state? Well, the catch of course! Fish of all kinds are still biting this time of year; you just need to know when and how to catch them!

Let’s start in Lake Eufaula, home of the bass – and we are talking big bass. Catfish and crappie are also among the fish you should be on the lookout for. Since t will be hot, fishing in the morning and late evening will be best this time of year. Look for lily pads and covered parts of the lake that offer shade and possibly cooler waters. Bass tend to be in deeper waters during the summer and will venture out in dim light to feed.

When you’re hoping for a trophy-size bass, the thick undergrowth of Lake Guntersville becomes your friend. Look for the densest areas when fishing this lake, and pay attention to the water temperature. The bass seek out the protection of the weeds, making it the perfect location to cast your bait.

Neely Henry Lake is another great spot to fish during the summer. Again, fishing early in the morning or later in the evening may bring the best experiences. Be on the lookout for covered areas that provide shade, and check the water temperature to take advantage of the cooler spots.

Find out the daily weather conditions and water temperatures for each lake on our website. This will allow you to choose the best time to hit the water. Always be on the lookout for pop-up thunderstorms, and be sure to seek shelter from lightning and heavy rain.

August is a great time to get outdoors and explore the Alabama Bass Trail. We can’t wait to see you there!
