5 Tips To Prepare For Winter Fishing

Gear

Make sure your gear is suitable for the weather. It’s especially important to keep yourself warm on the water. Due to cooler temperatures, the sun not being as strong this time of year, and what could be a chilly breeze, you will need warm clothes (think layers!) and boots.

Thermos

Keep warm by bringing a large thermos full of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. These drinks will help keep your body warm from the inside out, which will allow you to stay out fishing a little longer, therefore providing you with more opportunities to reel in a lunker.

Tune-Up

Cold temperatures can stiffen and freeze your reels. Before going out to the lake, spend a few minutes tuning them up. If you don’t know how to do this yourself, take your rods and reels to a fishing store so they can return your equipment to full function.

Bait

Change your bait from summer to winter. Instead of using lures, try using live bait. In the colder waters, fish move more slowly, so your bait should match the fish you are trying to catch. Lures move too quickly for most fish in the winter months. But if you do wish to continue using a lure, choose one that has feathers or has a slower movement in the water.

Sonar

Due to the slow winter movement of the fish, using sonar can be very beneficial for finding a spot to cast from. Fishfinders and depth finders are handy tools for anglers of all levels.

The Alabama Bass Trail has many waterways for you to enjoy fishing during the colder days of the year. Please choose one or explore them for a new experience each time you fish.
