Fishing does not have to be a daunting experience! It should be an activity that you can enjoy by yourself or with family and friends. While it may seem somewhat complicated to a first-time angler, we’re here to help. With the following checklist, you can be out by the water casting in no time!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Fishing license

Check the state regulations for who should and how to purchase a fishing license. Be sure to research and understand the catch limit and size limit on fish

Fishing rod and reel

A fishing rod and reel is needed for casting and retrieving your catch. Whether purchasing your equipment or borrowing from a friend, you will want to keep your rod and reel combo simple for your first fishing experience.

Fishing line

Fishing line comes in a variety of materials and diameters. Larger diameter lines are stronger than the smaller diameter lines. As a beginner, stick to simple monofilament.

Fishing weights

Weights help provide a longer distance for casting and they keep your bait under water. Split shot weights are simple to use and install, making them a great weight to start with.

Fish hooks

Like everything else, keep the fishing hooks simple as well. Hint: Buy hooks that are not snelled. A circle hook is usually the best option for beginners, as they stick in the corner of the fish’s mouth and are easiest for removal. They also make it easier to catch fish – you will only have to start reeling for the fish to be hooked.

Bobbers

Bobbers, also known as floats, help keep your bait off the bottom of the lake. Bobbers provide a clear indication of a fish on your line.

Live bait or fishing lures

Live bait is used on the end of the fish hook to attract fish. Live bait may include nightcrawlers or minnows. Lures are available in numerous styles, so you may wish to have an experienced angler guide you to the best options.

Tackle Box

A tackle box is useful to keep your fishing lures and equipment in one place.

All these items can be found at a sporting goods store or a tackle shop. Don’t hesitate to ask for help with your choices – fellow anglers love to share their knowledge and experience with newcomers!
