Coming home with stories to tell has always been a highlight of the fishing on the Alabama Bass Trail. But coming home safe is everyone’s top priority. Please put these boating safety tips into practice when you hit the trail.
Check Your Gear
Before you go, make sure your boat, motor and gear are all properly maintained and in working order and that you have the following items on board:
- Boat hook and throwing line
- Warm clothing
- First aid kit
- Navigation equipment
- Bailing system
- Rope
- Waterproof torch
- Alternative power (a spare outboard, oars or paddles)
Be Weather-Wise
Always check local weather conditions before departure. While on the water, keep an eye out for changes in clouds, winds or sudden drops in temperature.
Develop a Float Plan
Always be sure to let someone know your plan for the trip. This should include where you’re going and how long you expect to be gone.
Know Where Your Lifejackets Are
Confirm that there are life jackets or approved personal flotation devices (pfds) for everyone on board. Alabama law requires that anyone under the age of 8 must wear a life jacket while on the water. Make sure all others know where pfds are stowed and that they are able to access them easily.
Use Common Sense
When you get out on the water, the number one safety tool is your common sense. Be sure to put your knowledge of boating laws and etiquette to use.
- Operate at a safe speed at all times
- Observe idle speed and no wake zones
- Be respectful of buoys and other navigational aids
- Be courteous to other boaters
- Avoid alcohol
Bonus Tip
If you need a refresher, check online or in your community for boating courses and for the availability of a free vessel safety check from the US Coast Guard.
