Whether you’re stepping onto a boat for the first time or you developed your sea legs when you were knee-high to a grasshopper, remembering boating safety could save your life.
In honor of National Boating Safety Week, May 22-28, here is a quick review of some of the basics:
- Wear a life jacket.
The National Safe Boating Council says that because circumstances can change quickly, even seasoned boaters should wear a life vest that is sized correctly and snug. To show your support, participate in Wear Your Life Jacket at Work Day, May 21, and you might win a prize! Post a picture of yourself at work or home wearing a life jacket, including the hashtag #lifejacketatwork, and tag @boatingcampaign. - Be prepared.
Before getting in your boat, make sure you know the Alabama boating laws, have adequate first aid supplies on board, and are mindful of capacity and the number of people going out on the boat. - Be aware of your surroundings.
Pay close attention to the weather! Avoid unnecessary risks and dress appropriately to avoid sunburn or hypothermia. - Have a plan.
Leave a float plan with someone you trust. Include the specifics of your trip and be mindful of boat speed, your responsibilities as the operator and maintaining a proper lookout. - Don’t drink and boat.
According to the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, alcohol is the leading contributing factor in boating–related fatalities. So please save the beer for the shore! Follow the tenets of Operation Dry Water to ensure your safety and that of your passengers.
Take time to learn more about National Boating Safety Week and to become an expert on safe–boating guidelines.
There is no question that boating on the waters of the Alabama Bass Trail provides exhilarating fun to share with the family, and there is no reason you shouldn’t have a wonderful time doing so. These simple guidelines make it a safe and enjoyable experience for all of us sharing space on the lake.
