In a state known for outstanding bass fishing, Lake Guntersville is at the top of the map and on top of the heap. It is Alabama’s largest lake and is a nearly 70,000 acres of heaven for fishermen. It’s been named one of the top 10 fishing lakes in the country and some consider it the top spot for bass. Lake Guntersville is located in northeast Alabama and most anglers target largemouth bass here, although bream, bluegill, redear and longear sunfish, crappie and catfish can be reeled in, as well.

An impoundment of the Tennessee River, Guntersville is known for an abundance of aquatic vegetation (hydrilla, milfoil and grass), as well as submerged tree stumps, providing fish with plenty of habitat and anglers with plenty of challenge. It has an average depth of 15 feet and a maximum depth of around 45. This is a hot spot for tournament fishing, including events of the famed Alabama Bass Trail Series, but recreational anglers can always find a spot on this popular, beautiful lake.

The lake is the centerpiece of Lake Guntersville State Park, one of the jewels of the Alabama State Parks system. Access points for fishermen, pleasure boaters and kayakers are numerous in the park and along the lake’s more than 900 miles of shoreline. This area is known as the “mountains and lakes” region of Alabama and has the variety of outdoor activities the name implies. The mountain views range from eagles in flight to waterfalls. Lakes provide on-the-water activities for all as well as the perfect setting for hiking, birding and more. Nearby, visitors even have underground cathedrals to explore.

Lake Guntersville is the perfect spot for fishing, whether you’re a serious angler or just serious about enjoying a good time on the water. It’s also a great starting point for an epic trip to explore all 13 lakes of the Alabama Bass Trail.
