The sun is peering out and ready to shine, warmth is filling the air, and everyone is ready to say goodbye to winter and welcome in the spring season. What better way to celebrate spring than kicking it off with a fishing trip?

Any of the lakes along the Alabama Bass Trail will provide many long-lasting memories. When packing for a trip, it’s easy to miss a few things. That is why we have a checklist of items to not forget when packing!

  • Fishing license. Treat your fishing license like you would your driver’s license and always have it with you when out fishing.
  • Tackle, rod and bait. It seems obvious, but this can be easily overlooked.
  • Sunscreen. Even if you think you don’t need it, you really do. Dealing with a sunburn makes it difficult to fully enjoy a relaxing time on the water.
  • Polarized sunglasses. These sunglasses will help reduce the sometimes blinding glare from the water.
  • Bug spray. Spring means mosquitos and other pests. Don’t let bugs drive you back to the dock before you are ready to leave the water.
  • First aid kit and life jacket. You really can’t be too prepared when it comes to safety. Prepare for the worst and make sure you have the right supplies in case of an emergency or injury. Life jackets should always be Coast Guard approved.
  • Waterproof bag. Protect personal belongings such as wallet and phone by securing them in a sealed waterproof bag.
  • Extra line, hook remover and pliers. Having the proper tools is important on any fishing excursion.
  • Food and water. Pack a cooler of sandwiches, chips, snack bars and some water bottles for an easy lunch.

Even with checklists, we still can have our moments of forgetfulness. No need to stress, though, because there are plenty of bait and tackle shops for last-minute supplies along the Alabama Bass Trail. See you out on the water!
