Fishing is an activity for everyone, no matter the age. Don’t hesitate to take the kids fishing and teach them a skill they’ll enjoy for years to come.

Not sure how to start? Below are some helpful tips for fishing with kids.

Safety

Safety is extremely important when around the water. Younger anglers in particular may not be aware of potential dangers. It’s crucial to go over the rules of water activities, boating and fishing with everyone before you arrive at the lake.

Preparation

As you plan a weekend fishing trip, be sure to choose a fishing spot that you know is active. When fishing with kids, it may not be the best time to try somewhere new.

Shore fishing

Start by fishing from shore. This allows kids to take a break from the rod and reel and explore or play other games on land.

Keep it simple

A fishing experience with children should be short. Kids can get bored easily – forcing them to stay out longer than they want can cause them to dislike fishing altogether. If your young angler is eager to continue fishing after your planned time at the lake, you can always stay longer.

Choose fun bait

Use earthworms, crickets and grasshoppers as bait. These are great for catching fish and provide a fun experience for the kids to gather and place on the hook.

Keep casting

Encourage children to keep throwing their line in the water. Excitement over the number of fish caught typically outweighs the size of the fish caught.

Let them reel in

If you hook a fish first, call the kids over so they can take part in the excitement of reeling in a fish.

Snacks

Bring snacks and drinks favored by your young anglers. They will need to remain hydrated and keep their energy up during the outing. Remember: A hungry child is a cranky child!
