Safety should always be a top priority for the water. It’s important to be safe whether you’re fishing on a boat, along the shoreline, or on a pier. We have gathered some quick safety tips to apply while fishing along the Alabama Bass Trail to keep yourself and everyone around you safe.

  • If using a boat, life jackets are important. Every passenger in the boat should have one.
  • If using a boat, keep it tidy.
  • Keep fishing equipment in the tackle box.
  • Keep fishing knives sharp and always cover the blade when not in use.
  • Use caution when baiting hooks and removing hooks from fish.
  • Look behind you before casting to assure you won’t hook another person or object.
  • Handle fish carefully.
  • Inspect waterfronts daily; the environment can change.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Follow signs around the water and do not fish where it is not permitted. The ‘no fishing’ signs are there to protect wildlife, protect vegetation, and/or for your safety.
  • Bring extra items with you for your safety, ie. Flashlights, extra water, a map, a cellphone.
  • Wear appropriate footwear for the conditions you are around.
  • Stay protected from the elements – rain, sun, wind, cold, etc.
  • Stay protected from insects, wear proper clothing and use repellent.
  • Do not fish alone.
