When you hear of the Alabama Bass Trail, bass is obviously the first fish that comes to mind. But there are many more fish swimming around the lakes that are popular catches, including crappie.

Crappie is so common on the ABT – especially Weiss Lake – that the lake is known as the Crappie Fishing Capital of the World!

Ready to reel in some crappie? We have some pointers to help get you started!

  • Minnows, worms and insects are the best for crappie bait. Minnows are a favorite among many anglers, but try them all to see what works during your time on the water.
  • Crappie usually feed during low light, making dawn, dusk and night good choices for crappie fishing.
  • Since crappie are slow and lazy, they are not too interested in chasing a fast prey. Keep your bait moving slowly for a better chance at attracting them.
  • Crappie enjoy eating minnows, so fish where minnows hide. Keep an eye out for bush or weeds. Fallen trees, old piers and docks are also areas where minnow could be taking cover.
  • If you spot one crappie, drop your line because you are likely to find more nearby. This species likes to congregate.
  • Not sure which rod to bring? Ultralight spinning or spincasting reels are popular among anglers who are fishing for crappie.

Head out to the ABT soon to test out your crappie skills!
