When you want to keep the fishing simple, but still want to be out on the water, a canoe might just be the answer. Fishing from a canoe gives you the benefit of exploring the lake without the hassle of trailering and launching a boat.
Before grabbing a canoe and jumping right in, consider the following tips for a smooth ride.
- Stay centered in the vessel to avoid tipping. This is easy to forget when casting or reeling in a big one. The wider the canoe, the more stable it is and therefore harder to tip.
- Bring a friend to help with paddling. They can also help with balance and/or muscle when reeling in a larger fish.
- When it comes to gear, keep it to the essentials. Not only is it easier to haul just the basics, but there may not be much space available for extra items.
- Protect everything in your canoe with waterproof bags or cases. If your canoe does tip, this saves items from being ruined or lost.
- Wear a personal flotation device and make sure it is Coast Guard-approved.
- Avoid areas with strong currents; the canoe is much better suited to calm locations.
Canoe fishing is a great option for new anglers because they are easier to transport and manage. You may also find a more secluded spot that a boat may not be able to access.

Canoes with keels are best on lakes, but many streams have bedrock so a canoe without a keel will go though the shoals in those streams more easily.
