Winter break isn’t far away, so why not bring the kids with you for a day out on the water? Catch some fish and make core memories. Bringing children along for the first time may sound challenging, but we have some tips to ease the stress and make it enjoyable.

Plan Accordingly

Choose the spot you are going to fish before heading out. You might consider fishing from the shore so the kids can access a bathroom easily.

Bring Lifejackets

Always bring a lifejacket for each person, especially when fishing in a boat. Wearing one while on the shore reinforces the safety habit.

Target Easier Fish

There’s no need to go for the big bass when fishing with your littles. Target the easier, more populated fish. It’s all about teaching basics right now.

Keep Them Comfortable

Kids will want snacks and drinks, so make sure you are heavily stocked. A blanket and dressing in layers is a great idea if it’s a chilly day.

Teach the Rules

There are rules to fishing, and it’s important that kids learn these along with the basics of catching a fish. Teach your young angler the importance of following the regulations. Your child might not need a fishing license, but you will need one to assist them.

Have Fun!

Fishing doesn’t have to be boring for kids. Keep your fishing day shorter than you would if you were alone. Encourage bug finding, looking at rocks, or other fun activities during the waiting periods between catches.

Bringing kids along with you can create a great bonding experience and a lifelong love of the outdoors. We’re looking forward to seeing you and your little ones out on the trail this winter!
