When I was asked what lake I would like to write a blog for from the Alabama Bass Trail, I had to choose Lake Eufaula. I’ve heard so many good things and stories about this lake in particular, but I’ve never fished the lake for myself. I struck out to Eufaula for a 3-day fishing adventure!
Day 1
Driving into Eufaula was just one of the most memorable parts of my first day. The downtown area was beautiful and honestly it felt like home. Passing amazing houses down both sides of the tree-covered road and seeing Eufaula’s home town veterans’ faces on banners on just about every sidewalk light really hit me. Being a veteran myself, this told me that Eufaula was going to a patriotic southern town for sure.
Due to the weather I wasn’t able to get out on the lake, but I was able to adventure around the town. I talked to lots of locals and many tourists as well. Everyone had only good things to say about the town’s reputation. The first thing I searched for while in town was a local tackle shop but, surprisingly I did not find any. I did run across Hummingbird’s headquarters and may try for a tour of that facility one day.
After driving for a little bit longer, checking out launch points for the upcoming day I decided to head downtown and see what I would run across. Walking a couple of blocks, I ran into some pretty good shops along the way. The first was Chattahoochee Outfitters, a small store that had some good-looking clothes and Yeti products. Then I got my wife on FaceTime and headed into her heaven, Southern Charm. She absolutely loved this shop and I think it made her mind up on wanting to come here with me for my next trip. Other places on down the street were Superior Pecans and Gifts and lots of other stores. Lastly I ended up at the Cajun Corner where I had some pretty amazing Cajun crawfish gumbo.
Lastly the Eufaula Lakepoint State Park where I stayed was just super comfortable. The park has just about any activity that you can ask for–golf, tennis, boat ramps, etc. The cabin I stayed in wasn’t like any other cabin that I’ve stayed in, on a fishing trip. Plenty of room, fireplace, back porch looking out to an awesome looking pond, back yard grill. I’ve stayed in a couple of cabins while fishing out on the Kayak Bass Fishing trail but this one takes the cake. The lodge also has a full-service restaurant and it’s just right down the road from my cabin.
Tomorrow I feel will be a bit of a struggle due to all the rain and cold weather but I’m hearing and seeing signs saying, “Big Bass Capital of The World” and I want to put that to the test. So I’m currently relaxing for the night and rigging reels and tackle, getting ready for a fun day of fishing tomorrow!!!
Day 2
Today will begin the first day of fishing for me on Lake Eufaula. Woke up too early, as I usually do on a fishing day, and headed towards my first location. Of course, on the way I couldn’t resist grabbing some doughnuts from The Doughnut King, best doughnut that I’ve ever had!
The first launch point of the day was located at the Old Creek Town Recreation Area. I chose this location first because of researching on Navionics I noticed two river channels, and lots of ledges and humps. As I started fishing the area, I was taken away by how perfect this place was. Coming straight off the launch point you’ll find a deep ledge and grass in the shallows. There are three nice-sized creeks that can be accessed from this launch and they all have a mixture of grass banks and ledges. I caught a huge drum out of the second creek, too bad it wasn’t a bass but, that big guy put up one heck of a fight. I was thinking to myself that if it were only fall or spring I could fill a bag quick in this area. After fishing the creeks, I headed out deep for a bit but only had about three hours of daylight left so I knew I had to try a different location.
The location that finished the day up was at Barbour Creek Public Boat launch. From here I thought that I could cover the two creeks before dark but was totally mistaken. This area started with a deep creek channel going under a bridge and I located fish in these deeper areas. So, I spent some time here and then moved on into the first creek. This creek ended up being pretty much another perfect set up for bass. Ledges and humps all over both creeks and grass on both sides. I fished as late as I could in this area with no luck but had a blast adventuring around this beautiful area.
Day 3
For the final day on the lake I decided the night before to look for a place where boat docks would be available. The temperature for the day was going to be in the mid 70’s and just that itself was exciting. I ended up finding a launch point a little more on the southern end of the lake located in the White Oak Creek Campground. The launch required a $5.00 fee due to it being owned by the Army Corps of Engineers but, let me tell you it was nice. There was plenty of parking, bathrooms and three boat ramps.
Launching out at 6:30 A.M. and the temperature being warmer which produced a ton of fog. I had about 10’ of vision so this was pretty uncomfortable. But what made me relax was using mapping through my Hummingbird depth finder; a company based straight out of Eufaula, AL. Using it to navigate me to ledges and avoiding shallow areas to fish was pretty easy. This is where I started my day, ledges along with a couple of boat docks. The only thing was that I still didn’t see any fish activity as expected for a morning like this.
Moving down the first creek, on the left, I found lots of large points that slowly descended into deeper water. Also, there were lots of floating and solid built boat docks, another great area to fish during the summer months. Moving towards the end of the creek the water got extremely muddy. Water clarity being at about 6” which really reminded me of the Alabama River after a hard rain. I chose to fish chatter baits and lures with a little more flash and sound back there.
Moving into the second creek again, lots of boat docks and also it held a couple more steeper ledges. By this time the sun was high, and the temperature was definitely rising. I fished this creek for about a mile in before deciding to head back towards the main lake. The main creek that flowed into the main lake had a massive creek channel with deep holes all down the middle. I fished just about every hole and ledge that I came across in this creek channel and had a blast. There’s just something about feeling the bottom of these channels with a heavy jig that excites me and even more exciting is getting a bite in deep water.
I finished up my last day around 2 P.M. and decided to load up and head back to Prattville. Of course, on the way back I had to stop by the Cajun Corner for some big to go bowls of gumbo in which they had no problem with me pre-ordering. All in all the trip was a huge success for me.
I didn’t catch a boat load of fish, but I did get to discover a brand new lake that I will for sure be revisiting during the spring, summer, or fall. I saw enough of this lake to make me want to head back for more. I only fished a total of three locations and each location that I fished was amazing, so I’ve just got to believe that the rest of the lake is the same or better.
