Spring is a great time to hit the water on Lake Martin. This lake is well known for more than just fishing. It’s a recreational hub for those who live and visit this beautiful region of Alabama, between the Talladega and the Tuskegee National Forests.

One of the largest manmade lakes in the country, the lake has more than 700 miles of shoreline and is arguably the most popular recreational lake along the Alabama Bass Trail. Luckily, Lake Martin has room for everyone, but since summer is the most popular season for boating, swimming and skiing here, many fishermen beat the rush and head out in the spring.

Crystal clear waters and steep, rocky bluffs present a challenge loved by many. The reward is catches of largemouth bass, spotted bass and stripers as well as black crappie and bluegill. All those miles of shoreline include numerous irregular points where bass feed and provide a wealth of structure near deep water, where they love to hide. The best spring crappie fishing is in the upper areas of the lake and peak bluegill spawning activity usually occurs early in May.

Public access is easy on Lake Martin, with numerous marinas and launch sites. As such a popular recreational lake, Lake Martin’s shores are popular with campers and outdoorsman of all kinds. Wind Creek State Park, which sits along the shore of the lake, is a favorite spot for camping, with nearly 600 campsites, an archery range, hiking trails and, new in 2018, a zipline course.
