Let’s talk fish. Did you know many diverse species of fish live in the waters along the Alabama Bass Trail? The trail is home to more than just bass. Crappie, bass, catfish, and more than 100 other species of freshwater fish are in these lakes. A mixture of mild climate and biodiversity of the waters makes it a great home for these species.

The largemouth bass is the Official Freshwater Fish in Alabama. However, perch swim throughout Wheeler Lake and walleye can be caught in Weiss Lake. Carp and buffalo fish can be found in Lake Guntersville – a record-size, 73-pound carp was caught there in 2012 and a 57-pound buffalo fish was caught in 1990.

Alligator gar swim throughout the Mobile Tensaw-River Delta. A 151-pound, 5-ounce gar was caught in 2004 and still holds the record in Alabama. With a diverse ecosystem, the delta is a breeding ground for freshwater fish and makes a great fishing location.

Lake Martin is known not only for bass but also for crappie fishing, even boasting a 4-pound, 9-ounce white crappie that was caught and recorded in 2000. This lake is also known for many recreational activities besides fishing. The clear waters and central location make it a top spot for vacationers.
